I remember first reading about Robert Mapplethorpe in the Arts section of one of the big Chicago newspapers in my hometown (in 1988-89?): since most of the readers were straight--a very sterile black and white photograph of some totally innocent-looking tulips (which I did not find especially compelling) was used as an example of the art of this gay artist that was somehow causing all the reactionary fools of America--to start frothing at the mouth
