Gay Character On Lost

I remember the hype about ABC's Lost in its first season. Without a TV at the time, I was mildly interested in the premise of the show and I recall reading an article about the hunky men on the show in a gay magazine. The author wondered how an island could be inhabited by a plane full of survivors without a single one being gay.

Between the second and third seasons, I finally broke down and purchased seasons one and two on DVD and caught up quickly. Now, I am a certified Lost freak, although I don't frequent the blogs and message boards for speculation about the show's meaning.

I must admit, though, that I began to wonder about the complete lack of gayness on the show, especially as I began to understand that the show's frequent use of flashbacks, and now flash-forwards, expands the character base even more.

Can't Get A Date?

I found a hot show on Logo. The show is called Can't Get A Date.  The episode I watched featured a gay man named Marc who had to overcome a negative self image to go on a date, something he had never done before.

The best part of the show was not Marc's coaching in Pilates from Mama Sutra or his breakthrough with Dick the Photographer.  It wasn't even the best that the pear-shaped Marc eventually went on what looked like a fun date with a hotty named MJ.

The best part is the execution of the show.  It takes itself seriously, with real advice that should be taken seriously.  At the same time the show makes fun of its str8 counterparts (Blind Date, Extreme Makeover, What Not To Wear...)  The pop up graphics are hilarious and included the definition of a houseboy and great amplifications of important breakthroughs for Marc, like his new "body awareness."

Lesbians Go Gayelle

gayelle.jpgCBS News on Logo debuted a new (to me) term. Apparently, a significant number of young lesbians have come up with a new moniker: Gayelle. It's the feminization of gay. Hmmm. The gayelles don't want to be the butt of jokes like their lesbian forebears. Hmmm.

I never thought of lesbians (or gayelles...or whatever) as being particularly fond of feminizations of any masculine terms. Isn't that where the terms womyn and wymyn came from?

Sure enough, Wikipedia lists three terms for the word gayelle. The first is a television station on Trinidad and Tobago, the second is for lesbian and the third, ironically is for cockfighting. Hmmm. read more >>
