This is supposed to be a fun blog, despite the fact that it seems to fall into controversy every once in a while. Still...I try to add some honest feelings of sadness, perspective and maybe even thanks whenever I can.
Heath Ledger was not gay. I am not going to invite controversy at this sensitive time. He just played one of the greatest gay characters in movies.
I remember reading a review of Brokeback Mountain before I saw it in the theaters. The reviewer spent copious space on the outstanding performances in the movie and then settled on something like "but this movie clearly belongs to Heath Ledger." He went on to describe the sheer energy Ledger could somehow keep contained in his sinewy body.
He lost the Academy Award for Best Actor to another straight man playing a homosexual, Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Capote. No matter, though. Those are just awards.
Ledger was a great actor and I am thankful that he granted his immense talent to a movie that may forever change gay rights for the positive.
No one has yet said how Heath Ledger died. Maybe he was hurting inside far more than we could ever know. Maybe that's why his performance as Ennis Del Mar was so beautiful.
Thanks for being a part of our lives Heath. Godspeed.
