For the first time, I watched an episode of Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel last night. Long before the show ended, I became convinced that the two co-hosts, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman are not only gay, but that they are in some sort of relationship with each other. We gay people are so crazy about our levels and names of relationships, that I am not even sure what it would be - buddies? Canadian marriage? secret lovers?. Suffice it to say that they not only seemed gay, but that they reminded me of my parents, who can be proven to have had sex with each other at least five times.
The episode I watched was the one where they tried to bust the myth about whether or not a single bullet shot through the hull of a plane in flight would cause a massive rupture that would suck people out of the plane and into, well...oblivion. They also tested the myth about the scene in American Graffiti where the cop car has its rear (yeah, I said rear) axle removed by a prankster who ties a cable to it and to a tree. The third myth involved an Arkansas hillbilly who was allegedly shot when a short circuit blew in his truck and caused the .22 caliber bullet he was using as a fuse to fire into him. All three myths were busted.
What's my evidence, based on this one episode? Well, first the three myths involved classic gay themes: being blown through a little hole, rear axle action with a cop (man in uniform,) and stupid hillbilly deaths. Ok, maybe the last one isn't so classic, but it should be. My main evidence was during the rear axle experiment, when Adam responded to Jamie's safety speech with a clear "We'll be fine, honey."
Add to this preponderance of evidence from one episode the overall feeling that these two "lifelong friends" (as described by the narrator) act so much like a gay married couple that I thought they were going to have a hissy-fit slapping fest at one point. They fit the traditional gay couple profile - the serious, smart one (who never goes out to bars) and the fun, crazy one who is more or less stuck in 5th grade.
So...with this preponderance of evidence from ONE EPISODE, I set out to see if anyone else has a gaydar reading on this. Well...the fabulous internet did not let me down! I found oodles of thoughts and, yes, EVEN MORE EVIDENCE.
Stay tuned to this blog for my reporting and thoughts on this happy couple!
