Just a new millenium "mid-lifer" hanging on to my free spirit and my need to live a fulfilling life outside the restrictive conventions of clocks and calendars.  So much time is spent on trying to make free time for ourselves that the process basically drains our ability to truly enjoy the moment when we are finally free of obligation. Cell phones, texting, IM-ing, email, etc. are heavy-handed, two-faced culprits in the demise of free time. Enjoying downtime is not so easy to do in this era of technological "attachedness".  So what am I doing writing a blog?  Read on and hopefully you and I will find out...

matt from 'memories of a gay-sha' sends me a reply

i finally got a response back from my dear old friend matt.  my e-mail to him was part of a previous post, memories of a gay-sha.   i've included just my e-mail to his mom that was forwarded to matt here with his response back.

it was about time.  the wait was starting to get to me.  i've been waiting for over a week.   i worried all kinds of scenarios for why he hadn't responded back:
1) his mom never got the message i sent her because of some internet screw up
2)  his mom didn't get the message because something bad had happened to her
3) worse, something happened to him during the war and she didn't have the heart to tell me
4) he got the message but was currently stationed in iraq and couldn't respond until later
5 he got the message but didn't care to follow up.
this would have been the worse of the worse if things were left this way.
luckily, i got an e-mail yesterday and now things seem to be back on track.  one of my closest friends ever is now back in my circle.  i am elated!

hi fxxx!
i don't know if you'll remember me right away, but it's me danny.  matt's friend from back in south city.  that's a long time ago and why i am writing you.  it's our 20th class reunion this year and it made me start to get in contact with old friends like cxxxxxx and cxxxxx.  so after a bunch of web searches using matt's name i found a military article with a picture of matt with his wife kxxxxxx, but that was it. no e-mail. no address. no way to contact him.  then i decided to type in 'kxxxxxx fxxxxxxxx' into the search box and a few links popped up but i just knew yours was the right one to click on.  so here i am writing to you to please let matt know that i am thinking of him and would like to get in contact with him if possible.
i suppose he might be in iraq and i hope he is well if he does happen to be there.  this also probably means it's difficult to reach him, but if you could please give him this e-mail that i used to contact you and this address to my blog www.ink2metal.blogspot.com he can decide what would be best for him if he chooses to write back.  it's been a long time and so much has changed in our lives so i don't expect that he necessarily wants to revisit those days, but i remember them to be some of the best times of my adolescent life and in large part because of the friendship we shared.
anyway,  i hope you are all doing well.  please say hi! to bxx. i have only the fondest of memories of hanging out at your house and the unmistakable smell of incense.  i can still imagine the aroma and it still makes me smile!

Hey Danny!

How the heck are you my friend?!?!?!  Man, talk about
a shout from the past!  I was thinking of the whole
group the other day when i got that infernal reminder
of my advancing age!  I can hardly believe it has been
20 years!  I have wondered about how you were over the
last few years, but the last time I tried to reach
you, I ran into dead ends.  But I realize I am mostly
just technology retarded/resistant and could have made
more progress if I were just a bit smarter.

So, are you going to the reunion?  I am not sure I
will.  I have pretty much ruled it out.  Although I
wouldnt mind making contact with a few of you guys &
gals from the old days, I have no great need for that
entire mess!

How are things in your life?  The web site looks good
and I knew I was in the right spot as soon as I saw
your smile!  Same old Danny smile!  Are you still with
that same guy I met way back when?  Jeez, how freakin
long ago was that?  I suck, I really am out of touch!

I am well.  I am still in the Army.  Going on 20 years
now (DUH!).  Plan on retiring in about 3.5 years.  I
am an officer now.  I finally went to college and got
a degree in Economics.  I am on my second wife and am
really enjoying it this time!  We got married in
Vegas, elvis, limos, gambling, the whole enchilada!
Been to Iraq a few too many times now and that has
done it for me.  Now I am teaching junior officers who
are getting ready to take command.  I am in San
Antonio and really like it down here!  I would love to
get back to SF, but it is way toooooo expensive.  I
took Kxxxxxx (my wife) there a couple times and we
really love it.

I just got a new macbook and was trying it out when I
saw the message from you to my mom (she forwarded it
to me).  Have you adopted any kids?  None for me.

Well, enough prattling on.  Drop me a note if you get
the chance.  Have you been successful in contacting
any of the old crew?

Take care and thanks again for making contact.
Your friend,
Matt
